The twists and turns in Linwood Barclay’s newest book Take Your Breath Away are enough to keep you guessing, without feeling like the answers are too contrived. Andrew Mason’s wife Brie goes missing for six years, and everyone assumes Andrew had killed her. Andrew remains living in the general area, but eventually changes his last name and attempts to move on with his life. Suddenly, a woman who appears to be Brie makes appearances around town and causes havoc, shaking up the members of Brie’s family and forcing Andrew to admit to his current girlfriend that he has a past he would rather forget. All the secrets that Brie’s friends and family had been hiding are slowly revealed as the reader follows along Andrew’s journey of trying to uncover the truth about his wife: has Brie been hiding out, waiting for the right moment to reappear? If so, why? Why now? And if it is not her, why is someone pretending to be her? And where could the real Brie be?

This is another fun read that will make you want to pack a picnic and head out to a secluded beach to read about the island residents’ exploits. The story is about a once popular, but now rundown, hotel that is purchased and exquisitely refurbished by an English billionaire. He hires town sweetheart Lizbet Keaton as the general manager, and we get to know her and the staff she hires as they work hard through the summer to attract and impress guests. The hotel gains popularity with the help of an unlikely tenant, someone who learns the secrets that the staff – and some guests – attempt to keep hidden, but is the popularity enough to make this hotel a destination for future seasons?

The Measure: A Novel Cover Image

Published: William Morrow - June 28th, 2022

I can say with certainty that The Measure by Nikki Erlick would be a very popular title for book clubs, because I have had several stimulating conversations with people, just by telling them the premise of the story: If you were given the option to learn exactly how long your life span would be, would you choose to know?

Erlick does a lovely job of presenting characters who make varying choices with their strings (indicators of each person's life span), allowing the reader to explore scenarios based on each choice. Do you learn you have a short string and then live to the fullest, or fall into a deep depression? If you have a long string, do you begin distancing yourself from those with a shorter string? Do you choose not to find out the length of your string? The political subplot did not interest me as much, but I appreciated how the author wove it through the story so that it had a satisfactory conclusion.

This is a quick read, which is good, because you will certainly want to talk about it with friends!
