“Bold, virtuosic, addictive, erotic – there is nothing like The Pisces. I have no idea how Broder does it, but I loved every dark and sublime page of it.” —Stephanie Danler, author of Sweetbitter

The latest E L James book is pretty good. On the smut scale, it was definitely entertaining. I'd say it's right up their with her previous "Fifty Shades" series. It's only one book so the story isn't as developed, but if you need a quick and easy read that isn't going to trigger anything emotionally within you, this is it! I definitely enjoyed it for what it was.

Published: William Morrow - April 16th, 2019

I wish I could give this book an 11 out of 10. Seriously, it was THAT good. The idea behind the concept of binding peoples' memories into books is truly unique. The development of the two main characters, Emmett and Lucien, is so in depth and realistic and relatable. I had such a fun time getting to know them. This book is technically considered Magical Realism, but when compared to other Magical Realism authors The Binding comes across as straight up fantasy. 10/10 would recommend. Huge plot twist. I won't give anything away. BUT READ THIS NOW!!!

Just finished this little nugget and holy wow is it so freaking good. First of all, I'll point out that this author also wrote one of my fave mermaid series ever (The Waterfire Saga), so obviously I had to read this one immediately. It's a total page-turner that explores the ideas of free will vs. destiny, and what could have happened if Cinderella's stepsisters had been given the opportunity to choose their own fate. The story is told from Isabelle's point of view, and I really enjoyed getting to know her. Since this book stems from the original Grimm fairytale, I will say it's a little dark at times, with some heavy themes in terms of target age range. Also there's cursing so if you don't like your kids reading bad words in their books maybe hold off on this one for a couple years. Other than that, I TOTALLY recommend this book. To anyone and everyone. I think adults will connect with this one too. It's a timeless tale of empowerment that we could all use a reminder of now and then.

This book is SO AMAZING! I loved every single minute of it.  The writing style is beautiful and the imagination of the culture of the story is truly unique. The story sets up an intricate class system that is shattered by deception and revolution. I love that the author made it so hard to choose a side in this story. I really hope it is the beginning of a series because I find myself wanting to know so much more about this world. 10/10 would definitely recommend.

It was really cool to find out this author was from Houston, so as a fellow Houstonian I had to laugh really hard at all the inside jokes. Overall, I really liked the subject matter of this book, and it was insightful. It goes into some women's rights history, and then looks at women's ongoing fight for equality in a male dominated society. Good material for people who are geeky about that kind of stuff.

Mera: Tidebreaker Cover Image

We got home from seeing Aquaman and I was so enthralled by the story that I just had to have more. Normally I'm not a huge fan of graphic novels. I just don't get them. There's not enough text to create any real story development. But I guess with graphic novels so much of the development happens in the images on the page. That's why they call it "graphic" novel. So with that in mind I dove in (pun intended) to Danielle Paige's Mera: Tidebreaker. I actually really liked it. I binged the entire thing in a couple hours. The illustrations are very well done and the writing is well developed. It's certainly not the same storyline as the movie, though. It seems to be another imagining of what might have happened. And let's talk for a second about Girl Power. There is SO MUCH feminine power in this GN. It's a tale of understanding and empowerment and nobility that this generation of growing minds needs. Not sure which of my coworkers snuck this into my locker at the bookstore, but thank you, kind stranger.
Would definitely recommend.

This book was AWESOME! I couldn't put it down. I read it in just a few days and definitely let some school work slack so that I could finish it. Worth it. The main character is so relateable and saucy. Her situation is really well written, and I like the way that she interacts differently with her family and friends and love interest. The fantasy elements are handled really well in this piece. It is believable and enjoyable. The twist is slightly predictable, but I was not mad about it at all. If you like Greek myth then this is a perfect smut read for you. Would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, or to anyone who likes a good heart-throbbing romance.

Loved this book!  I loved how down to earth Phoebe Robinson presents herself. It's like she's not afraid to talk about some stuff that I really wish more people would talk about. Everything's Trash, but it's Okay is quirky and relevant and provocative and it really just calls us all out so we can laugh at ourselves. Would absolutely recommend.

I'm a little bit salty that this book wasn't longer. I know there is so much more that can be said about the heinous acts of men on the internet. I love the social commentary of this book. It has gotten a lot of flack as just a feminist rant outing men for their uncontrollable urges, but like honestly why shouldn't it be that? Women shouldn't have to deal with the kind of atrocities illustrated in this book, and I really admire how the author encourages women to stand up and be loud, normalizing the discussion until it is no longer necessary.

On the Come Up Cover Image
ISBN: 9780062498564

Published: Balzer + Bray - February 5th, 2019

I was completely blown away. On the Come Up was fire. It had me hooked from the beginning and I was hanging off of every word. The character development of the main character Bri is really in-depth and captivating. A teenaged girl who wants to be a famous rapper so she can get her family out of poverty and gang violence is absolutely relevant.

SPOILER ALERT: I will warn parents thinking of giving this book to their kids about the one single moment of physical intimacy that happens, but it is small, and in my opinion, relatable for teens coming into their bodies and navigating hormones and relationships. That being said, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who reads in the Young Adult genre.
